Tempering Process
The primary purpose of tempering is to optimize the mechanical properties of hardened steel and its alloys and to adjust the balance between hardness and toughness. The resulting microstructure is called tempered martensite, which has a more refined and less stressed lattice than the original - Hardening, Annealing and Tempering.
